D#2 HW#5

After the primary exploration of this topic, I found that my interests were confirmed. It is definitely the topic for me. One thing that surprised me is that so many people are affected by eating disorders.

I think this is a highly valuable topic. So many of us are affected by it, whether we’ve suffered through the illness ourselves, or watched some we care go through it. The obsession of being thin, like the emaciated actresses or models in society affects millions of teenagers and women in this country alone.

I’ve read some books on it this topic that helped me have a better understanding of the issue. I have also been through it personally. It wasn’t a full blown eating disorder, but it was bad enough that my mother threatened to put me in rehab. That’s when I knew I had to do something about it. Looking back I learned a lot from that experience. It was a dark time in my life that I never wish to go back to, but in the end it has made me a stronger more confident person. We all do stupid stuff, but what matters is that we learn from those mistakes and move on.

I find that advertising is such strong influence on kids. My volunteer work with pre-teens has made me more aware of what these young ladies perceive how they should look and how they work to achieve that look. They are not willing to let their bodies go through the normal progression. They want to look like "Paris" today. We try to encourage balance in their lives (including exercise, eating, sleeping, etc.); everything in moderation; and to have patience (life takes time -- enjoy every aspect and not to rush growing up), in our attempt to help them deal!
